Alder is a native, fast growing tree with shiny dark green leaves. It produces catkins between February and early spring. Avoid planting in shallow, chalk soils. Alder is perfectly adept to wetter or poor-quality soils and tolerates flooding. Alder hedging is a wildlife magnet supporting many native species. Suitable for hedges over 2m high.

How many trees do I need?

On every product page, in the facts section, you'll find the 'Trees per metre', this is how many plants you will need per metre for a single row hedge. For example, if you wish to buy beech hedging to make a 10m long hedge, we would recommend 3-4 plants per metre equalling 30-40 plants.

Another consideration when planning a hedge is whether to plant in a single or double staggered row, so what's the difference?

A single row hedge is great when on a budget or intending to grow a high hedge. A double staggered rows make a zigzag shape and we recommend their use where a more impenetrable hedge or protection from exposure is required.

Provenance

All our trees can be traced back to a provenance within the British Isles. We proudly highlight this so that you can make an informed decision when choosing which trees to buy. The provenance of the seed source is becoming increasingly important as we understand more about our environment and tree health. Our stock is predominantly grown from seeds sourced from the south of England.
